Two members of Team USA will take to the mat in Beijing, China to fight for the gold at the Sportaccord World Combat Games. Sensei Hood is coaching the US Karate team at the World Combat Games.
Elisa Au Fonseca (Chicago, IL) will compete against Bouthaina Hasnaoui of Turkey in the Women’s -61kg final. Fonseca, the 2008 World Silver Medalist and three time world champion, showed why she is considered by many the best female fighter in the world with wins over Malaysia, New Zealand, and Peru, and a tie against England.
Cheryl Murphy (Jamaica, NY) will face 2008 World Champion and 2010 USA Open Champion Tiffany Fanjat of France.
Murphy, coming off of double National Championships at the 2010 USA National Karate Championships and with a noteworthy international record of her own, defeated an impressive field of European and African champions on her way to the championship match. Sensei Cheryl visited Greenville earlier this month to train for this event and prepare for the World Championships.
This is the inaugural Sportaccord Combat Games. It brings together the most prestigious athletes in the world in a variety of combat based sports, for an Olympic style multi-sport event featuring 13 martial arts and combat sports and 1108 athletes. For the karate event, only 80 athletes were invited from around the world. Additional information about the Combat Games is available at www.worldcombatgames.com.
